Upper Michigan Gun Owners Association (UMGOA) Newsletter
March 10, 2025
Greetings, UMGOA Members!
Spring is just around the corner here in Upper Michigan, and with it comes one of our biggest events of the year: our Annual Banquet on April 26th! We’re excited to gather as a community of proud Second Amendment supporters to celebrate our rights, share some good food, and look ahead to what’s in store for gun owners in 2025. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details on tickets and the evening’s agenda.
Volunteers Needed for the Banquet!
We can’t pull off this event without your help! We’re still looking for volunteers to assist with everything—setup, registration, serving, cleanup, you name it. If you’ve got some time to spare and want to pitch in, please reach out to us or sign up at our next meeting. This is a great way to get involved, meet fellow members, and make sure our banquet is a success. Let’s show the strength of our community!
Second Amendment News Roundup – February 2025
It’s been a busy month for gun rights, with plenty of developments on the national stage and right here in Michigan. Here’s what’s been happening in February 2025:
Trump Takes Bold Action on the Second Amendment
President Trump hit the ground running in February with a major push to protect our gun rights. On February 7th, he signed an Executive Order calling the Second Amendment “an indispensable safeguard of security and liberty.” This order directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to review all federal regulations, orders, and actions from the Biden years (January 2021–January 2025) to root out anything infringing on our rights. Within 30 days, Bondi is tasked with presenting a plan to roll back anti-gun measures, including ATF rules that have targeted law-abiding gun owners. Groups like Gun Owners of America and the NRA are cheering this as a “sledgehammer” to Biden’s policies, and we’re hopeful it’s just the start of more victories to come.
Trump’s order also hints at big changes—like possibly repealing the ban on suppressors under the National Firearms Act of 1935. Supporters say this could protect our hearing without compromising safety, though critics are already crying foul. We’ll be watching closely to see how this plays out and what it means for us in the Upper Peninsula.
Republicans in Congress Join the Fight
On February 28th, Roll Call reported that Republican senators are leveraging Trump’s executive order to pressure the ATF to ditch several Biden-era rules. They’re calling out regulations they say violate our Second Amendment rights—like attempts to impose universal background checks and rules that could criminalize unaware gun owners. With Trump ally Kash Patel stepping in as acting ATF director, there’s a sense that the agency might finally get reined in. For us in UMGOA, this could mean less federal overreach and more freedom to exercise our rights.
Michigan’s Gun Laws: One Year Later
Closer to home, Michigan’s stricter gun laws—enacted in February 2024—are showing their impact. By February 13th, reports from CBS Detroit and WXYZ noted that nearly 300 people were barred from owning guns in 2024 under the new Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law, also known as the “red flag” law. ClickOnDetroit highlighted that safe storage laws are also in effect, aiming to reduce gun violence. While some see this as progress, many of us in UMGOA view it as a step toward eroding our rights. We’re keeping a sharp eye on how these laws affect law-abiding gun owners in the U.P. and whether Trump’s federal pushback might shift the tide.
Gun Owners Celebrate, But Challenges Remain
The mood among gun owners is optimistic after Trump’s moves. A February 11th Washington Times piece cited a CBS/YouGov poll showing 70% of Americans think Trump’s keeping his promises—including on guns. The NRA and Gun Owners of America hailed the executive order as a historic step, with hopes it’ll dismantle what they call the ATF’s “weaponization” against us. But not everyone’s on board—Mother Jones warned on February 18th that Trump’s plans could undo “ghost gun” rules and red flag laws, stirring up the usual debates. For UMGOA members, it’s a reminder to stay vigilant and active in defending our rights.
